PRESS RELEASE: Quechan Tribe Applauds National Monument Expansion and Calls on President Biden for Partnership to Designate the proposed Kw’tsán National Monument

YUMA, AZ (May 2, 2024) - President Jordan Joaquin of the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe released the following statement regarding today’s announcement on the expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains and Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monuments:

“The Quechan Tribe applauds President Biden’s actions to expand protections for the San Gabriel Mountains and Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monuments. This is a significant win for the original stewards of those lands, the Gabrieleno, Tongva, Chumash, Kitanemuk, Serrano, Tataviam, Wintun and Patwin people. We are energized by this action and we look forward to working closely with the Biden Administration to see the same attention placed on the proposed Kw’tsán National Monument, and the cultural significance it has to our people.
